Kosher Foods for Passover

Despite the numerous rules and restrictions that are imposed by Jewish laws, there are number of individuals and families who follow a strict kosher food diet.  Each Jewish kosher food law should be closely examined and closely followed on a daily basis.  In addition to everyday restrictions, there are kosher laws that limit the type of food that can be consumed during Passover.

To first understand the guidelines in place for food consumption during Passover, you must first understand what Passover is.  Passover is a holiday that is celebrated all around the world.  It is used to symbolize and celebrate when the Jewish were freed from slavery in Egypt.  Passover is celebrated by eating specific foods and telling historic stories.

Food is considered kosher food if it meets the guidelines imposed by kosher law.  Those laws and guidelines have been in place for a long period of time and many have biblical references. The same can be said for Passover and that is why it is extremely important that Jewish individuals or families following a strict kosher diet adhere to the guidelines placed on Passover food.

Foods that contain a leavened agent or are considered chometz are not allowed to be eaten during Passover.  In fact, chometz and leavened products are supposed to be cleaned and removed prior to Passover.  The leavening agent found in many prohibited Passover foods is often what causes a food product to rise when heated.  Prohibited foods include barley, oats, spelt, wheat, and rye. 

All kosher food products are properly marked with symbols.  These symbols are to help distinguish kosher food products from non-kosher food products.  To be considered kosher food for Passover food items must not contain a leavening agent, but they must also be considered kosher all year round.  The easiest way to determine if an item is considered kosher food for Passover is to obtain a kosher food list. 

Due to changing food products and new suppliers there is a kosher food list specifically for Passover that can be obtained from a number of locations.  It is likely that your local church, trained kosher professionals or specialty kosher stores will have the kosher food list on hand.  Updated lists are the most used of all kosher food lists because they often include newly developed products.

In addition to the above mentioned Passover kosher food restrictions; there are additional guidelines that are imposed.  To be considered acceptable kosher food for Passover a rabbinical supervision must be used.  This requires trained professionals to actually package the food or at least oversee it.

Not all individuals celebrate Passover in their own home.  Many families get together to celebrate Passover in one location.  This type of situation may make it a little bit for difficult for you to determine if you are eating kosher food that is acceptable for Passover.  If you are celebrating Passover with other individuals who adhere to a strict kosher food diet then it is likely everything will be okay.  If you are unsure you may want to offer cooking assistance or ask your meal preparer for more information.
