Myths have become part of our daily life.  The worth part about myths is that they are not true, but most of us continue to believe them.  Believing in a myth is often easier than researching to come up with the truth.  Kosher food myths are one of the many myths in place all around the world, but they can be harmful.

You may be wondering exactly how a myth can be harmful.  The truth is that many of the myths surrounding kosher foods are providing inaccurate information.  That inaccurate information could prevent a number of individuals from believing in the successful consumption of kosher foods.

MYTH:  The tax on kosher food is a scam that is only devised to make money.

FACT:  There are some kosher food products that do cost more than traditional foods, but that is due to the way that they are prepared.  To be considered kosher food, items must be slaughtered and prepared a specific way.  This is likely to increase the cost of kosher food. 

It has also been said that the tax is due to the packaging of kosher foods.  All kosher food products must display a specific kosher food symbol. That symbol allows shoppers to easily distinguish kosher food from non-kosher food.  The cost of printing the symbols on kosher food packages is minimal at best.  Most kosher food companies do not even track the amount of money they spend on kosher food packages.


MYTH:  That kosher food is better than other traditional foods.

FACT:  There is no scientific proof that states kosher food is better than other foods.  This means that there is no proof stating that the quality of kosher food is better than traditional foods or that they have a higher nutritional value.  Most kosher food is eaten because it was prepared in a proper way.  The Jewish do not believe in eating an animal or other items that come from an animal that was improperly or inhumanely slaughtered.


MYTH:  All foods that are natural are considered kosher.

FACT:  This can easily be considered one of the most common myths associated with kosher foods.  Many individuals mistakenly believe that all unprocessed or unchanged food is considered kosher.  There are a number of different restrictions that are placed on all foods.  Those foods include also include fruit, vegetables, meat, and dairy products.  The best way to determine if a food product can be considered kosher is to find a detailed list of kosher foods.


MYTH:  Kosher food can only be prepared at home.

FACT:  There are a number of different restaurants around the world that prepare and sell full kosher meals. These restaurants are often managed by Jewish individuals who adhere to the rules and guidelines of kosher food preparation and consumption.  It is possible to follow a kosher food diet when you are not at your own home.


MYTH:  All kosher food can be eaten during Passover.

FACT:  There are additional guidelines that are placed on kosher foods during Passover.  Wine, beer, oats, rye, and rice are just a few of the items that are not to be consumed during Passover.  At any other time these kosher food products are acceptable, but not for Passover.
